Step 1: How to find out your undertone

The first step is to understand → Your skin’s undertone
Skin colour is classified into three types: Cool, Warm and Neutral

No matter how much your external skin may change, from being out in the sun or even a spray tan, everyone has a consistent undertone colour. By learning what it is, picking makeup becomes easy.

Check your neck

First, inspect the colour of your neck and cleavage.

Why?

Your face and shoulders get a lot more sun exposure, so it is harder to determine your true undertone from these places.

The neck and cleavage offer a much more true undertone.

Evaluate your veins

Evaluating your veins may sound odd but it’s highly effective. Your vein colour signifies your authentic, natural colour leanings, making it the prime way for how to figure out your skin undertone.

Lift your hand up to your face and look at your wrist.

What colour are your veins?
Purple or blue
Greener in colour (perhaps even a smidge yellow)
Neither - your veins are between green and blue

Knowing that, read on to discover your perfect colour match.

Cool undertone (Pink or Rosy)

Does this sound like you:

  • Like a 'true royal', your veins are purple or blue
  • You slather on sunscreen in summer - because your skin burns easily
  • Your skin doesn’t really tan - that’s why you love a dash of bronzer on your cheeks
  • Your eyes are blue, grey, or green eyes
  • Your hair is blonde, brown, or black hair

If those resonate, it’s likely you have a cool undertone, which is vital in knowing how to find the right foundation shade. With less melanin in the skin, your skin has a soft, sometimes peach or porcelain appearance.

What cool undertones should wear and avoid

As a cool undertone, neutral, light tones are going to highlight that radiant, natural beauty.
Avoid overly yellow or dark shades that will give an odd, orange tinge to your lovely complexion.

Warm undertone (Olive to Yellow)

Does this sound like you:

  • Your veins are green or even a smidge yellow
  • Your skin doesn’t burn easily
  • Even if you’re in the sun for a short time, you tan quickly
  • You have amber, brown or hazel eyes
  • Your hair is strawberry blond, auburn or black hair

If those resonate, it’s likely you have a warm undertone. That means, in figuring out how to choose the right foundation shade, you have higher levels of melanin in your skin that give it that prone-to-tan edge.

What warm undertones should wear and avoid

As a warm undertone, you’ll look fantastic in espresso-esque shades (think delightful caffe latte or cappuccino) and shades with a yellow or gold base, which give you a sunny base.
Avoid dark copper shades, which will come out appearing rather orange.

Bronzer Warm

Neutral undertone (Neither of the above, right in the middle)

Maybe neither description above resonates with you. You don’t tan very quickly - but your skin doesn’t burn fast either.
Plus, you did the vein test and found your veins to be an in-between tone.

This is not a bad sign!

It simply means you’re neutral. In fact, with less underlying colours to match, neutral undertones have the easiest time finding the perfect foundation.

Step 2: Choose makeup for your colour

Now that you have a better idea about what makeup will look fantastic on your face, try colours based on the test. Pick a few samples to order (2 - 3 ideally) from the makeups that match your skin tone, determined above.

Step 3: How to test makeup colour at home

Once the sample of makeup arrives, here’s how to try it on and make sure it is the right shade.

  • Sprinkle a little powder in the lid of the jar (remove the label on the sifter in advance).
  • Dip the hairs of the Kabuki brush in the powder with rotary motion and apply it to the jaw line.
  • If the colour blends in with your skin colour, you have a match.

The most common foundation makeup mistake

Foundation should be so natural, it isn’t noticeable. (That’s why how to find your undertone is so important.)
Even if you want to be more tan or 'more' of a certain shade, placing that 'dream colour' on will not give the desired look. However, that foundation will look fake and too apparent.

Instead, we invite you to embrace the gorgeous shade you are. The colour of your skin is absolutely perfect. How to find the right foundation shade? Only look to makeups that will enhance its beauty.

Question! Do I need different makeups for different seasons?

If you tan especially easy, your skin may be a quite different shade from summer to winter.

One method is to try a few colours. One may fit well in winter - and another when the sun comes out.

If you fall in between, some makeup savants will mix the colours - dabbing from both pots to get that 'just right' middle ground shade.

Thankfully, mineral makeup colours are very forgiving because the powder adapts to your skin. You can likely use one colour today and another tomorrow - both will adapt to your skin as long as the makeup is the right undertone!
