What does mineral powder do?

Why this luscious, cruelty free makeup is so good for skin

Mineral makeup has become revolutionary for a few key reasons. If still wondering, “What does mineral powder do?” - we have you covered, like a good foundation.

In this guide, we’re going to break down information even most avid makeup lovers don’t know.

This elegant walkthrough will include answers to:

  • What is mineral makeup?
  • What is mineral makeup made of?
  • Why choose mineral makeup vs. other types of makeup?
  • What are the benefits of mineral makeup? (They’ll surprise you)

What is mineral makeup?

Mineral makeup is made of materials extracted from our precious Earth. The main ingredients are minerals such as iron and zinc oxides, which are ground into tiny, shimmering particles for our skin’s use.

Since ancient times, minerals have been used for self-decoration and adornment. The famed beauty, Cleopatra herself, is a prime example, using kohl around the eyes to craft her staple look. Since then, modern techniques have evolved mineral makeup into a truly miraculous creation.

So what is the biggest difference between “regular” makeup and mineral makeup? Doesn’t traditional makeup also contain mineral ingredients such as mica and iron oxides? Well yes..but it also contains a lot of other ingredients. The lack of these other ingredients makes mineral makeup…mineral. If you read through the ingredient list of most “supermarket” makeup brands, you will come across ingredients such as water, mineral oil (not tob e confused with mineral makeup ingredients), preservatives, parfum and synthetic pigments. Our makeup is free of these ingredients.

What is our mineral makeup made of?

Here are the main ingredients in mineral makeup by Mineralissima:

  • Iron oxides: Matches your skin type and color
  • Zinc oxide: Is a natural sunscreen, antioxidant & anti-inflammatory
  • Mica powders: Creates instant glow and shimmer
  • Titanium dioxide: Is a natural pigment with a natural sunscreen
  • Organic oils: (Lip glosses) Oils that soothe chapped lips

Why choose mineral makeup vs. other types of makeup?

Most products, even some vegan makeup brands, use heavy oils, waxes, preservatives and chemicals in their makeup, which make your face feel heavy, smear throughout the day and ultimately irritate the skin. Common drugstore and makeup counter options clog pores and give the skin no room to breathe.

Sacre bleu! You don’t need any of that.

In addition, most makeup has added fragrances, which induce flare ups for most skin, especially any that are prone to acne, rosacea, psoriasis and eczema. With mineral makeup, the natural ingredients and non-chemical, no-fragrance recipes are good to the skin.

Mineral makeup seems to be better tolerated by the skin than conventional makeup. Is that right? If so, how is that possible?

There's always someone who's allergic to something. Minerals generally have no potential for hypersensitive reactions. The more complex a cosmetic composition, the greater the chance that there is an ingredient present that is not tolerated (by someone).

What are the benefits of mineral makeup? (They’ll surprise you)

Mineralissima mineral makeup is carefully designed to make sensitive skin look and feel healthy, containing no artificial fragrances, dyes, parabens or preservatives. With a short and clear ingredient-list, the risk of an allergic reaction is reduced. People with sensitive skin can finally apply make-up daily without any worries!

Mineral makeup is more versatile than other types of makeup. The make-up easily adapts to your needs. When working with pure pigments which can be found in mineral make-up, you can mix almost every powder to achieve your own desired colour.
Because mineral makeup is so pure, the products have a long shelf life. The powders contain nothing that helps bacteria to grow, so you don't pay for something that spoils quickly. Not only do most products have an excellent shelf life, but the pigments in our mineral makeup are so well-balanced that the makeup also stays on your skin for a long time.

Trying out different makeup brands can get tiring. Once you've used Mineralissima products and seen the results, you'll see the difference between mineral-based makeup and normal makeup. The beautiful shine, the light feeling and the beautiful coverage make it impossible to turn your back on this makeup. And how beautiful it is that beauty products can be kind to the earth, to your skin and to the animals as we make sure that no animal has to suffer for our products.

The benefits

Long lasting

A little bit will go a long way! The composition of our ingredients ensures that the powder provides optimal coverage throughout the day. The natural sunscreens help to protect the skin and if you suffer from oily skin, we have special products such as a primer or finishing powder available to combat oiliness.

Shelf life

Mineralissima products have a long shelf life. You want to be able to enjoy your products as long as possible without having to throw them away because the best-before date has passed. Our mineral make-up products are inorganic and contain no ground for bacteria growth. However, we do recommend that after opening your packaging, the product is replaced after one year because the makeup brushes which come into contact with the skin can possibly transfer bacteria into the makeup.

Versatile

Mineralissima offers a wide range with different product categories. Once you know how it works, mineral makeup is great to work with and you can create many different looks regardless of your skin tone. Do you find loose powders a little tricky to work with? Take a look at our growing range of pressed products. In addition to the well-known foundations, you can also choose from a great range of blushers, bronzers, lip products and mascara. There's a multitude of colours to choose from, or mix the colours yourself to create your own unique colour blend.

Safety

As described above, we do not add chemicals or preservatives (with the exception of our mascara and eyeliners) to the products and perfume is also avoided. Mineral make-up fuses with the skin's natural oils without clogging the pores. Mineral makeup is often recommended after chemical treatments or laser peelings for a good reason; the soothing properties can calm irritated skin after facial tratments and due to its pure form it is gentle on the skin. The minerals in the makeup adhere to the skin, melting with the natural skin oil, without clogging the pores. Our products are safe and suitable for people with allergies, gluten sensitivities and other skin problems. However, always consult a doctor or skin specialist to make sure mineral makeup is safe in case of serious skin problems.

Quality

Our cosmetics contain only pure minerals and our ingredients are of natural origin. Our suppliers are carefully selected for quality and they must be able to demonstrate that no child labour is used in the process. By avoiding chemical components, the use of our products is not only safe for the user, but also for the environment. Mineralissima products are designed for high coverage. The ingredients are carefully balanced to make your skin glow. We believe in beauty without cruelty and none of our products or ingredients have been tested on animals. All our products are manufactured in Europe and mostly in the Netherlands. We are proud that our range is 100% vegan.

Lightweight

Say goodbye to the caked-on look of traditional makeup. Mineral make-up is easy to apply and not only feels like a second skin, it also has a natural result. Your skin can simply 'breathe' during the day and you can easily remove it again with the facial cleansers you are used to.

Wonderful results

Mineral makeup helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It helps hide and often even reduce acne or skin problems. Mineralissima gives the skin a healthy, natural glow, making you look younger and more vibrant. Both women and men experience excellent results with our products.

More?

Allright, you know a lot about mineral makeup now. Qurious for more? Keep on reading...

How much mineral makeup should I use?

(This is the #1 mistake we see)

With most makeups, a good amount is needed to get proper coverage.
In contrast, very little mineral makeup is needed to get a gorgeous, flawless look.

Simply dab the brush until there’s a very light, pale amount of makeup on the bristles and swirl in those buffing, circular motions to apply. Start small, so you can see how little is truly needed for the skin.

How do you remove mineral makeup?

One reason we are so passionate about this makeup? It is so easy to remove, no matter how tired you are at the end of a long day.

Simply use either:

  • Soap and water
  • Makeup remover
  • Facial wipes

To wipe the product away.

If any product spills, such as on the bathroom counter or in a medicine cabinet, use a moist wipe, household cleaner or a paper towel to make like an infomercial and easily clean it up

What ingredients don't we use, and why?

  • Formaldehyde: A known carcinogen, neurotoxin, and skin sensitizer. It can be found in eye shadows, cleansers, nail polish, body washes, and more.
  • Petroleum jelly: Could be contaminated with impurities.
  • Diethanolamine, Triethanolamine (DEA, TEA): Toxic to respiratory system and a skin sensitizer.
  • Parabens, ethylparaben, alkyl parahydroxybenzoate, isobutylparabens, butylparaben, methylparaben, and propylparaben: Used as a preservative in many cosmetics. They are intended to prevent the growth of yeast, mold, and bacteria in cosmetics. Possibly endocrine disrupters, and a skin sensitizer. Some studies have found a link to breast cancer in women. May interfere with reproductive function in men.
  • Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP): Toxic to immune system, kidneys, and liver. Considered a water pollutant under the Clean Water Act.
  • 1,4-dioxane: A known carcinogen.
  • Lead: Found in some brands of lipstick. No level is considered safe for children. Lipstick is one of the most commonly ingested makeup products.
  • Siloxanes: This chemical is used to moisten, smooth, or soften. It is harmful to wildlife and fish, and is a suspected endocrine disrupter.
  • Synthetic colours: Often derived from coal tar or petroleum sources. Possible carcinogen and skin irritants.
  • Triclosan: Known endocrine disrupter, specifically reproductive hormones and the thyroid. It’s also a skin irritant.
  • Propylene glycol: Suspected to cause dermatitis or even hives. It is a skin irritant and can be found in makeup products, moisturizers, hair sprays, and shampoo.
  • Mercury: May be found in eye shadow. It is a neurotoxin.

Some companies who advertise natural cosmetics will add bismuth oxychloride to their products. It is typically a white powder base. It is a mineral, but it is not a natural one. It is a metal derivative. It is frequently found in traditional products as well. It helps make the product more wearable and silky. Unfortunately bismuth is a chemical substance and can be quite irritating to the skin. Mineralissima is free of bismuth oxychloride. Our products are also nanoparticle-free. Nanoparticles are ingredients that have been micronized into ultra-small particles. They are so small that they can penetrate the skin’s barrier, possibly causing side effects that have not yet been studied.

The million dollar question: is mineral makeup better than traditional makeup?

You have the power to decide. One finds mineral makeup more pleasant/better, the other prefers "regular" makeup.
